Group essay dealio

OK, so I am doing my paragraph on the stereotypes/satire on men in the book and Victorian era. My first concrete detail is when lady Bracknell is talking about what occupations men should have and smoking. my commentary about this is about her thinking that men need "something" to do in their lives. and seeing as the upper class men will never work a day in their lives. smoking is a good occupation. my second concrete detail happens to be Algernon talking about how awfully hard it is to do nothing. My 2 commentaries about this are that men in the upper class of the Victorian era, really never did anything, and also that they could have gotten a job, but they chose to do nothing anyways. My third concrete detail is when lady Bracknell is talking about her husbands occupation. Which (big surprise) is staying at home doing nothing) Lady bracknell is controlling and wont let her husband do anything. also, lord bracknell doesn't care. he's rich, comfortable, and lazy. Why should he do anything?

Poetry out loud

The poem, that I picked to evaluate was Siren Song. The performer, Teal Van Dyck, Performs this poem, in my opinion, marvelously. Her articulation and voice, particularly stood out to me. I could tell that she thoroughly understood this poem through her voice, and her dramatization (although at times a bit overbearing) really helped me to understand this poem very easily.


The meaning and reason for this poem, is to show the mythical monsters "The Sirens" in a different, but at the same time, same old light. In this poem, the narrator is one of the sirens, seemingly just wanting off the island, and waiting for a brave and chivalrous sailor to come by and save her. But, towards the end of the poem, there is a shift, that shows the sirens so called "distress call" is really just another way to lure sailors into the sharp rocks of the sirens isle.

Motifs

Motif. I used to think, "What is the difference between motif and symbols?! Are they no they same thing?!!" Reading To Kill A Mockingbird has really helped me realize the differences. A Motif is a symbol, but is usually more subtle, and can ( and usually will) recur throughout the story. Like a symbol, it has some deeper meaning and helps to aid the overall message that the author wants you to recognize throughout the story. Unlike Symbols, Motifs usually do come up in the story more than once, but usually in different context with different examples.

Symbols are basically motifs. The only real distinction that i have seen between motifs and symbols, is that motifs generally seem more specific, while symbols cover more ground and are more generalized. Yes, they can be very confusing at times,and as much as you may disagree motifs and symbols are different!!!!

Extra Credit Blog (Symbolism)

Tom Robinson:

This picture, to me, is symbolic of Tom, because it shows that even the strongest of people and animals can be wrongly chained up. For the case of Tom Robinson, he can only be set free by his "Senors" (white jurymen). The same goes for this elephant. The only way he can be set free, is if the person who chained it up, decides it can be let go. No matter how much that strong person or animal can try, he cannot break free without the help of their tormentors.

Life Lessons

I know,this quote isn't my grandma's, like I promised, but I chose it because it impacts me much more than my grandma's quote: "You don't need a good foundation under a shithouse." My real quote, has been drilled into me since the beginning of my life. It is from my parents and has really helped me through a lot in my life. They are by far the MOST IMPORTANT words that I have ever heard in my life. They are: "We will always be proud of you, if you always try your hardest."

This makes me not worry about not being good enough for them, EVER. I know that just as long as I try my hardest, whether it be at school, sports, or a job, my parents will be proud of me. This saying also, occasionally comes back to bite me in the butt. Since my parents know my potential, they always hold me to it, and know when i am not trying hard and just slacking off.

My Best Friend

If you didn't know him, you might think he never said a word before in his life. As a passerby you may not even see him or think of him as your age. But if you spend the time to get to know him, well... he might seem kind and peaceful (which he is most of the time) but he also can be very violent and could kick your butt in a heartbeat ( even if you were a lot bigger than him)

He is quiet. Very quiet. He is definitely an introvert but he is one of the most intelligent people I know. He is one of the most unique and somewhat crazy people that you may know. Over everything else, he wouldn't hurt a fly and is a very generous, chivalrous, and kind person, but could beat you up, down, and all around just as fast. To Back this point, consider this. Every time he has come over to my house, he has brought one of his many knives, just because. I mean... HE OWNS A REAL SWORD! Anyways, I could trust him with anything. I would very willingly put my life in his hands. His name is Stuart Doty.
